The Motorbike Theory Test is designed to assess one’s knowledge of motorcycle theory with an emphasis on road rules and optimum riding practices. It is taken on a computer screen and is comprised of two discrete parts. The first part focuses on factual knowledge, whereas the second part concerns hazard perception.
The theory test must be taken and passed before booking the practical test. Nonetheless, most experts suggest that it is wise to get some actual riding experience prior to taking the test. There is an exemption for riders who have taken and passed a motorcycle theory test as a prerequisite to passing a practical moped test, and now seek to upgrade to a motorbike licence.
The test can be booked either by phone or online. Be sure to have your DVLA or DVA driving licence number and a credit or debit card ready. You will be provided with a booking number, and an appointment letter should arrive in about a week.
There are more than 150 centres where the test may be taken. Certain documents will be required. Either a signed photocard licence and paper counterpart or a signed driving licence and valid (though not necessarily British) passport must be presented. These are the only acceptable identification documents and must be original (not photocopied).
Failure in either portion of the test requires that the entire test be retaken. Test takers must wait a minimum of three full business days before they will be permitted to take the test again. Also, riders on their first full motorbike licence that receive six penalty points before two years of riding will lose their licence and be required to start again with the motorbike theory test.
If you pass you will be provided with a certificate that is necessary to take the practical test. The certificate is valid for two years. If the practical test is not passed within this period, the motorbike theory test will have to be taken and passed again before booking the practical test.
